Declan McCollam, an Australian PGA Professional, has been elected President of the Golf Industry Association (GIA) in India. This appointment follows a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years in global golf and hospitality management. McCollam received the International Australian PGA Member of the Year award in 2023, recognising his contributions to the sport.
He brings extensive leadership acumen to his new role with the GIA. Since 2020, McCollam has served as the General Manager of Prestige Golfshire Club in Bangalore. In this capacity, he has overseen significant golf and residential operations at the facility.
His tenure on the GIA board over the past two years precedes his elevation to the presidency, demonstrating his commitment to Indian golf.
Prestige Golfshire Achievements Under McCollam
Under McCollam's management, Prestige Golfshire Club has earned notable recognition. The World Golf Awards named it India’s number one course four times. The Golf Industry Association itself also recognised the club twice with the same top honour. His leadership at Prestige Golfshire included the oversight of a US$30 million clubhouse renovation project.
He also directed the construction of a new driving range and teaching facility, enhancing the club's practice amenities. Additionally, McCollam executed several course improvements. These included the creation of new tee boxes, redesigns of bunker complexes, and the restoration of the course's lakes, all contributing to the club's high standards.
Strategic Priorities for the GIA
McCollam’s presidency will focus on three core areas: workforce development, education, and inclusivity within the Indian golf industry. The GIA plans to partner with The R&A to launch regional training programmes starting in October this year. These initiatives will cover essential golf operations, clubhouse management, and advanced agronomic practices.
A key objective is providing high-level education and certification within India. This will enable local professionals to advance their careers without needing to study overseas. The GIA also aims to drive the adoption of The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter, seeking to expand female participation and industry representation.
Furthermore, collaboration with major global manufacturers and retail brands will support ongoing skill enhancements for the national golf workforce.
