Future of LIV Golf to be Decided

LIV Golf is set to determine its operational future by the end of October 2026, with options including winding down its operations or proceeding with a proposed 2.0 model. This information emerged during a recent hearing in a US federal bankruptcy court, where an attorney representing LIV Golf communicated the impending decision to the presiding judge, Michael Kaplan.

The court proceedings highlight a critical juncture for the rebel circuit, which has been navigating a complex landscape of tour conflicts and financial restructuring. The outcome of this decision will significantly shape the professional golf ecosystem for the coming seasons.

DP World Tour Imposes New Player Rules

Adding pressure to LIV Golf's deliberations, the DP World Tour recently issued an ultimatum to players considering the LIV 2.0 model. Guy Kinnings, chief executive of the DP World Tour, stated that players will not be permitted to compete on both the European circuit and LIV 2.0 starting next season.

This new policy requires players to make an exclusive choice, as the DP World Tour will no longer allow limited participation.

LIV Golf's attorney, Rob Fitzgerald, expressed concern to the court, suggesting the timing of Kinnings' announcement appeared to be an attempt to interfere with LIV's reorganisation process and raised anti-competitive issues similar to those previously voiced by LIV.

Financial Backing and Player Movements

In the same court hearing, Judge Michael Kaplan approved an amended restructuring support agreement between LIV Golf and BC Partners. This agreement facilitates LIV's ability to rehire staff and commence planning for its next iteration. Crucially, BC Partners is set to provide up to $US300 million in financing to LIV Golf, including an initial injection of $US4 million.

This financial backing is deemed an important initial step towards identifying viable paths for the circuit, whether through continued operations or a wind-down. Separately, an attorney for former world number one Jon Rahm informed the court that Rahm independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0 and subsequently decided to depart from the circuit.

Implications for Asian Golf

The outcome of LIV Golf's operational decision, expected by late October 2026, carries direct implications for Asian professionals and the region's golf landscape. Should LIV proceed with its 2.0 model, the DP World Tour's new rules will force players, including those from Asia, to commit exclusively to one circuit.

This could affect the competitive landscape for events co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the Asian Tour, potentially channelling more talent towards the established tours and their strategic alliances within the region.

Conversely, a wind-down of LIV could alter the dynamics of player recruitment and prize funds across various tours, including those with a significant presence in Asia, by removing a major competitor for talent and financial resources.
