LIV Golf Secures $300M from BC Partners, Future Decision by Month-End
A US court approved LIV Golf's restructuring agreement with BC Partners Global, injecting $300 million as the league awaits a decision on its 2.0 format by October's close.

Court Approves Restructuring for LIV Golf
In a recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy hearing, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of New Jersey, presided over by Judge Michael B. Kaplan, formally approved LIV Golf's Restructuring Support Agreement (RSA) with BC Partners Global.
This critical step includes a commitment of $300 million in cumulative financing from BC Partners Global, aimed at supporting the league's efforts to reinvent itself.
According to Robert Fitzgerald of Gibson Dunn, counsel for LIV Golf, the league anticipates a definitive decision on its future operational path, whether as a revamped “2.0” version or a wind-down, by the end of October.
Judge Kaplan clarified that while the RSA approval is an important initial step in identifying viable routes for the debtor, it does not inherently dictate the confirmation of a broader plan or the approval of a disclosure statement.
New Equity Model and Player Contract Revisions
The proposed structure for LIV Golf 2.0 outlines a significant shift in player compensation and ownership. Under the terms of the agreement, players are designated to receive 52.5 percent equity ownership in the league, in addition to signing bonuses. BC Partners Global and other potential investors are set to hold 45 percent, with management retaining the remaining 2.5 percent.
During the hearing, Judge Kaplan also granted LIV Golf's motion to reject the current contracts of 19 golfers. LIV stated that these existing agreements do not align with the contemplated compensation framework of the 2.0 version, necessitating their termination as a step towards restructuring and negotiating new deals for the league's future.
DP World Tour Conflict and Player Departures
LIV Golf's legal team voiced considerable concern regarding alleged interference from the DP World Tour. LIV's attorney, Mr. Fitzgerald, highlighted comments made by DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings to BBC Sport earlier this week, indicating that players participating in LIV 2.0 would be banned from competing on the European circuit.
Mr. Fitzgerald characterised the timing of these statements as a “clear attempt to interfere” with LIV's reorganisation process and its player relationships, raising anti-competitive concerns similar to those previously expressed by LIV.
Concurrently, several players have recently departed LIV Golf, including Jon Rahm, whose attorney indicated he found the 2.0 terms “unacceptable,” alongside David Puig, Abraham Ancer, and Adrian Meronk.
Key Deadlines and Future Viability
The path forward for LIV Golf includes several key dates and conditions. The next bankruptcy hearing is scheduled for 20 October 2026. Furthermore, the agreement between LIV Golf and BC Partners Global establishes a deadline of 25 October 2026 for players to commit to LIV Golf 2.0, though BC Partners retains the discretion to waive this deadline.
Crucially, the approved RSA stipulates that LIV Golf must secure commitments from a “requisite number of players” to ensure its continuation as a bona fide golf league. Ultimately, BC Partners Global will assess whether LIV Golf has garnered sufficient player commitments and signed the appropriate talent to proceed with its new operational model.
Implications for Asian Golf
The outcome of LIV Golf's restructuring will have direct implications for the professional golf landscape in Asia.
Should LIV 2.0 successfully stabilise and launch, its renewed financial backing and player roster could lead to a re-engagement with Asian markets for tournament staging, potentially offering new competitive avenues for players and attracting significant fan interest.
Conversely, a potential wind-down of LIV Golf would alter the competitive dynamics for player talent and event hosting, which could strengthen the position of established tours operating in the region. Asian golf stakeholders will closely observe BC Partners Global's assessment of player commitments and the league’s ultimate decision by the end of October.
