Kapalua Secures LPGA Tournament

The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort on Maui is set to welcome the LPGA Lotte Championship in 2027, with tournament play scheduled for March 18–21. This move establishes a new chapter for the Hawaiian venue, which previously hosted the PGA Tour's Sentry event for over two decades.

The Lotte Championship will feature a prize fund of $3 million, bringing top female professional golfers to the renowned course. LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler expressed enthusiasm for the relocation, stating the organisation is "thrilled to have Kapalua Resort and The Plantation Course serve as the venue" for the event.

PGA Tour's Departure and Course History

Kapalua's Plantation Course had a long association with the PGA Tour, hosting The Sentry from 1999 through 2025. However, the PGA Tour confirmed that The Sentry will move to Torrey Pines starting in 2027.

The 2026 edition of The Sentry at Kapalua was cancelled due to severe drought conditions and mandatory water restrictions on Maui, which prevented the Plantation Course from meeting the Tour's agronomic standards. The final PGA Tour event at Kapalua, held in January 2025, saw Hideki Matsuyama set a tournament record score of 35-under par.

Lotte Championship Relocation and LPGA Ties

The Lotte Championship relocates to Kapalua after five years at Hoakalei Country Club on Oahu. The 2027 tournament at Kapalua will immediately follow the inaugural Nanea Cup, scheduled for the week prior on Hawaii's Big Island.

This is not the LPGA's first presence at Kapalua; the resort's Bay Course hosted the Kapalua LPGA Classic in 2008, an event won by Morgan Pressel with a $1.5 million purse. Hawaii native and U.S. Women's Open champion Allisen Corpuz, who grew up attending the Lotte Championship, believes Kapalua offers "an incredible venue to showcase the beauty of Hawaii."

Implications for Maui Golf Tourism

The arrival of the LPGA Lotte Championship is a significant development for Maui, supporting the island's ongoing recovery efforts following the 2023 wildfires and subsequent drought. For international golf travellers, the Plantation Course will continue its role as a high-profile destination for professional golf, now featuring the world's leading female players.

Those planning a golf trip to Maui in March 2027 should be aware that tee-time availability on the Plantation Course will be limited during the March 18–21 tournament window. This ensures Kapalua remains a prominent fixture on the professional golf calendar, reinforcing Hawaii's appeal as an early-season golf travel destination.
