Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club, situated on the New South Wales Central Coast, Australia, marks its 20th anniversary this year. Watson described the opportunity to shape this land without significant restrictions as rare. Approximately 20 acres of the course, including areas from the first green to part of the sixth hole, sit atop this old landfill. Developers covered this section with 250,000 square metres of sand fill. This process raised the land profile by up to eight metres above sea level.

It also brought ocean views into play on these holes. The resulting man-made dunes and contours are difficult to distinguish from natural formations.

Enhancing Playability and Water Sustainability

Early in its history, Magenta Shores received feedback regarding course difficulty, particularly from extensive fescue rough. The club subsequently adjusted its setup to improve playability for a wider range of golfers. Over the past six years, significant improvements to playing surfaces have occurred.

Course superintendent James Newell has overseen a programme to convert all fairways from Legend couch grass to Santa Ana couch. This change reduces water consumption. The maintenance team is also converting the remaining back nine tees to the more resilient Santa Ana grass. Furthermore, the club increased its water storage capacity by 300 percent.

This expansion of the irrigation lake reduces reliance on local water supplies and lowers operational costs. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to both golfer experience and environmental responsibility.
