The National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) has affirmed that the Philippine Open, recognised as Asia's longest-running national golf championship, will proceed as scheduled from November 12 to 15. This confirmation follows the departure of BingoPlus as the primary presenter.
The tournament, a 72-hole championship, is now set to receive significant backing from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Asian Tour. NGAP President Al Panlilio has indicated that the prize fund for the event will be at least $1 million, equivalent to approximately P63 million. The Masters course at Manila Southwoods will host the competition.
New Backers Step In
NGAP President Al Panlilio expressed gratitude to the new partners, specifically mentioning PSC Chair Pato Gregorio and Asian Tour CEO Cho Minn Thant. Panlilio's statements followed a recent meeting with Asian Tour officials where commitments from additional corporate sponsors were secured.
He noted that several other businesses are keen to support the event, with final details currently being arranged before public announcements. Preparations at the Masters course at Manila Southwoods have been underway for at least two months, with the venue being readied to offer a challenging championship layout for the field.
Defending Champion Returns
Frenchman Julien Sale is the reigning champion, having secured his first professional victory at last year's Philippine Open. Sale made history as the first debutant professional to win the event, closing with a five-under-par 65 in the final round for a total score of 269. His triumph was by a single stroke over Thailand's Sadom Kaewkanjana and Japan's Tomoyo Ikemura.
Filipino golfer Miguel Tabuena was also a strong contender in last year's field, finishing four shots behind Sale and emerging as the top local player, drawing considerable support from the home crowd.
