PGA Tour winner Sahith Theegala confirms his first professional appearance at Kingston Heath Golf Club, December 3–6, boosting the Australian Open field.

Sahith Theegala Confirmed for Australian Open Debut
PGA Tour winner Sahith Theegala will make his professional debut in Australia at the Capital.com Australian Open, scheduled for December 3–6. The American player is set to compete at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne, joining a strong international field. Event organisers confirmed Theegala’s participation, noting his addition reinforces the championship’s appeal. This marks his first professional tournament in the country, following a significant amateur victory there in 2020.
A Strong International Field Assembles
Theegala's entry further strengthens a field that includes two-time Masters champion Rory McIlroy, Australian stars Adam Scott, Cameron Smith, and Lucas Herbert, alongside former Stonehaven Cup winner Joaquin Niemann. Theegala has established himself as a prominent figure on the PGA Tour since earning his card in 2022.
He claimed his first victory at the 2023 Fortinet Championship and achieved a third-place finish in the 2024 FedExCup. He has also represented the United States at the Presidents Cup and reached a career-high Official World Golf Ranking of No.11.
Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland noted that Theegala's addition strengthens an already outstanding field, offering Australian fans a chance to see him on a Sandbelt course.
Theegala's Australian Professional Premiere
Theegala expressed his enthusiasm for competing for the Australian Open trophy in Melbourne. He highlighted his anticipation for playing at Kingston Heath, a course he has heard many positive remarks about. While this will be his initial professional tournament in Australia, he is familiar with Melbourne's Sandbelt region.
In 2020, as a 22-year-old amateur, he secured a four-shot victory at the Australian Master of the Amateurs, held at Victoria Golf Club, adding his name to a list of past champions. The player noted a "full-circle feeling" about returning as a professional, having turned pro later that same year. He recalled enjoying his time and the golf in Australia during his amateur visit.
Tournament Details and Regional Impact
The Capital.com Australian Open is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour through its Strategic Alliance with the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia. The Victorian Government, via Visit Victoria, supports the 2026 men's Capital.com Australian Open.
Minister for Major Events Anthony Carbines anticipates tens of thousands of fans will attend, boosting the local visitor economy by filling restaurants, wineries, and hotels.
For travelling golfers from Asia, the inclusion of high-profile players like Theegala and McIlroy elevates the tournament's appeal, potentially drawing more visitors keen to experience Australia's Sandbelt courses.
This high-calibre event offers a concrete reason to plan a golf trip to Melbourne in early December, allowing golfers to combine watching top professionals with playing some of the region's renowned courses.
