Tan Secures Two-Shot Lead

Singapore's Shannon Tan holds a two-shot advantage in the individual women's golf competition at the 2026 Asian Games, following the second round at Kasugai Country Club's East Course in Japan. Tan delivered a six-under-par 64 today, bringing her two-day total to 13-under-par 127. Her performance places her firmly ahead of the field as the tournament progresses.

The Kasugai Country Club, located in Kasugai, Aichi, Japan, is hosting the golf events for the Games, providing a challenging layout for the region's top amateur and professional talents.

Second Round Highlights

Starting Thursday's play with a three-shot lead, Tan began her round strongly from the 10th hole, securing five birdies within her initial six holes. She added another gain on the 18th before continuing her impressive scoring with three more birdies on holes one, two, and four after the turn.

Despite a late challenge where she dropped three shots on the sixth, eighth, and ninth holes, her strong start ensured she maintained control of the leaderboard. India's Pranavi Sharath also produced a notable round, carding a 63 to move into solo second place. Korea's Yang Yunseo and China's Yin Ruoning are currently tied for third position, both on a total of 133.

Women's Team and Singaporean Efforts

In the women's team event, China has taken the lead with a combined score of 268 strokes. Singapore follows closely in second place, just one shot behind with a total of 269. The Republic's other competitors, Chen Xingtong and Amanda Tan, both recorded rounds of 73. These scores saw Chen Xingtong drop to tied-19th, while Amanda Tan is now in 25th place individually. The tight race at the top of the team leaderboard suggests a compelling battle for medals in the upcoming rounds.

Men's Competition Update

The men's individual competition sees Chinese Taipei's Wang Wei-hsuan and China's Ding Wenyi sharing the lead. Singapore's Hiroshi Tai posted a round of 70, placing him in a tie for 22nd, nine shots adrift of the leaders. James Leow finished his day with a 73, positioning him in tied-36th, while Nicklaus Chiam carded a 75, ending the round in 44th place. In the men's team standings, China and Japan are currently tied for the top spot, with Singapore in 12th position.

Implications for Singapore Golf

Shannon Tan's strong showing at the Asian Games represents a significant moment for Singaporean golf, demonstrating the potential for its players on a major international stage. Her ability to maintain a lead against a strong field offers a clear indicator of the nation's rising talent.

For Singapore, a medal in the women's individual or team event would provide a substantial boost to national golf programmes and inspire future generations of players. The performance of Singapore's male golfers, while currently outside the top positions, also provides valuable experience competing at an elite level, contributing to their long-term development within the sport.
