USGA Updates GHIN App: Enhanced Stats, Apple Watch Features
The United States Golf Association unveiled its updated GHIN mobile application on 5 October 2026, introducing advanced statistical tracking and a redesigned interface for Apple Watch users.

USGA Unveils Redesigned GHIN App
The United States Golf Association (USGA) launched a significantly updated version of its GHIN mobile application on 5 October 2026. This refresh introduces a comprehensive redesign and new features aimed at improving the golfer's experience before, during, and after each round.
The primary function of the app, score posting, remains central, alongside a prominent display of the user's Handicap Index. Tom Padula, managing director for GHIN, stated the organisation's commitment to evolving GHIN with the ambition of becoming the leading golf application available.
The update, which incorporates modern design principles and direct feedback from golfers, establishes a foundation for future developments. Users updating the GHIN app will immediately notice a cleaner, more intuitive, and consistent design, simplifying navigation while retaining familiarity.
Advanced Statistical Tracking Introduced
A key enhancement within the refreshed GHIN app is the introduction of a dedicated Stats section. This feature allows players to monitor trends in various aspects of their game and performance over time, building on the popular GHIN Rewind annual summary.
The Stats section aims to deepen golfer engagement with their data through improved visualisations, relevant metrics, and a year-round layout. Golfers can access streamlined navigation via dedicated subtabs, providing an overview of activity trends such as rounds played, frequency, and recent score patterns, along with metrics like birdies and three-putts per round.
The app also offers a modernised score history with interactive rounds, a focused view of Handicap Index progress including Differentials and milestones, and reimagined hole-by-hole performance visualisations to identify patterns.
Advanced charts track dispersion, putting performance, and overall round trends, while course-specific insights detail rounds played and average scores per hole.
Enhanced Apple Watch and Community Challenges
Beyond statistical tracking, the updated GHIN app also features a fully redesigned experience for Apple Watch users, mirroring the new mobile application's aesthetic. This allows golfers to keep their phone in their bag and rely solely on their watch for on-course information, with a cleaner interface optimised for the smaller screen.
General users can view yardage to the middle of greens, while those with Enhanced GPS access receive distances to the front, middle, and back of greens, as well as key yardages to hazards and layups. Furthermore, the USGA has introduced GHIN Challenges, enabling Allied Golf Associations (AGAs) to create interactive leaderboards at courses within their communities.
This initiative connects more golfers with a Handicap Index, fostering friendly competition using net scores at daily-fee or municipal courses. Currently, 36 AGAs are participating, with over 750 Challenges established and more than 30,000 golfers involved. The app also allows users in seasonal score-posting regions to save scores for personal tracking during the off-season.
Global Reach and Asian Implications
The GHIN app, which integrates with the World Handicap System and the Rules of Golf, serves over 3.6 million golfers in the United States alone who maintain a Handicap Index.
While the initial rollout of this redesigned application is gradual over the coming weeks, and a GHIN.com redesign is planned for the coming months, its global integration with WHS suggests potential for broader adoption. Asian golf associations and course operators could consider how similar digital tools might enhance golfer engagement and competition within their regions.
For instance, the success of GHIN Challenges in connecting over 30,000 golfers across 36 AGAs in the US could inform discussions among Asian golf bodies about implementing comparable net-score leaderboard systems, particularly for public and daily-fee courses, by the end of 2027.
