Zach Bauchou Leads Bank of Utah Championship with Career-Best 62
Bauchou holds a one-shot advantage after the opening round at Black Desert Resort, as several players posted low scores in Utah on 1 October 2026.

Bauchou's Dominant Start
Zach Bauchou established a one-shot lead at the Bank of Utah Championship, carding a career-low nine-under 62 during the opening round on 1 October 2026. Playing at Black Desert Resort, Bauchou concluded his round strongly, securing birdies on his final two holes.
This included a 12-foot putt on the par-3 17th and a two-putt birdie on the 602-yard closing hole, which he reached in two shots. This performance marks Bauchou's first 18-hole lead on the PGA Tour.
Currently ranked 86th in the FedEx Cup standings, his strong showing is critical as only the top 100 players at the conclusion of the FedEx Cup Fall in November will retain their full playing cards for the 2027 season.
Bauchou commented that he felt his play had been consistently solid throughout the year, despite a lack of high finishes, and believed his current form exceeded his previous results.
Other Strong Performances
The opening day saw numerous players achieve impressive scores, reflecting favourable conditions in southern Utah. Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju was among nine golfers who posted a seven-under 63.
Yellamaraju, currently 59th in the FedEx Cup, is aiming for a strong finish in the Fall series to secure a spot within the top 60, which would grant him eligibility for prestigious signature events like those at Pebble Beach and Riviera. Defending champion Michael Brennan also started well, carding a 64, placing him among a group of six.
Nick Taylor, a recent Presidents Cup participant, finished his round with a notable 50-foot eagle putt, also contributing to the group at 64, which included his Presidents Cup teammate Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Australian Cam Davis opened his tournament with a four-under 67.
Smith Achieves Rare Albatross
Jordan Smith of England delivered one of the most spectacular plays of the day, achieving an albatross on the par-5 ninth hole. Smith holed out his second shot from 238 yards, adding to an earlier 30-foot birdie putt on the eighth, which propelled him to eight-under par.
This rare feat, Smith's first albatross, was particularly special for him, especially as it contributed to his strong finish for the round. Other players who posted a 63 included Kevin Streelman and Nick Dunlap, both of whom are outside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings. Streelman notably birdied six of his last eight holes.
Jackson Koivun, 21, who was unbeaten in his Presidents Cup debut last week, recovered from an early two-over start with three consecutive bogeys by making four birdies in his final five holes, finishing with a 69.
Implications for International Players
The competitive start to the Bank of Utah Championship shows the high stakes for many international players seeking to secure their PGA Tour status for 2027. With the FedEx Cup Fall series concluding in November, performances in events like this directly influence players' eligibility for future tournaments, including signature events.
While this tournament is held in the United States, the strong showing of non-American players such as Sudarshan Yellamaraju, Nick Taylor, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Cam Davis, and Jordan Smith is significant.
Asian golf fans and industry professionals will observe how these international standings develop, as the performance of players in events like this influences their eligibility and participation in future global tournaments, including those that may be staged in Asia or feature Asian players in the 2027 season.
