Tournament Reduced, Playoff Set

The PGA Tour's Butterfield Bermuda Championship concluded abruptly after high winds forced the cancellation of its final round on Sunday, 25 October 2026. This decision reduced the tournament at Port Royal Golf Course to 54 holes, denying Australian contender Cam Davis the opportunity to close a four-shot gap on the leaders.

Consequently, Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman, who were tied at the top after three rounds, are now set to compete in a sudden-death playoff. The unexpected turn of events significantly altered the outcome for players vying for crucial FedEx Cup Fall points and tour status.

Davis's Strong Performance Cut Short

Cam Davis, a 31-year-old Australian, had positioned himself for a strong finish, aiming to reverse a challenging year on tour. He entered the final day at 12-under par, sharing 11th place and just four strokes adrift of the joint leaders. His third round on Saturday, a four-under 67, was particularly impressive, following a stellar 64 on Friday.

Davis's bogey-free performance on Saturday demonstrated his capability to navigate the windy conditions that ultimately led to the tournament's curtailment, leaving him without a chance to push for a significant payday.

Unplayable Conditions Force Cancellation

The decision to cancel Sunday's play at Port Royal was made after gusts exceeding 65 km/h swept across the course in the morning. These severe conditions rendered the course unplayable, preventing any of the 72 players who made the cut from starting their final rounds.

After several hours, officials confirmed the cancellation for Sunday, and with a similarly grim forecast for Monday, the event was officially declared a 54-hole tournament. The playoff between Smotherman and Power is slated for 9 am local time on Monday, 26 October 2026, at the par-3 16th hole, contingent on improved weather.

High Stakes for Playoff Contenders and Asia-Pacific Golfers

The sudden-death playoff carries significant implications for both Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman. For Power, a victory would secure his PGA Tour card through 2028 and guarantee a spot in the elite Championship Series for the new 2028 schedule, a crucial boost as he currently sits just outside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings.

Smotherman, who claimed his inaugural PGA Tour title earlier this month in Utah, would earn a berth in the US Open with another win.

For Australian and other Asia-Pacific golfers striving to secure their positions and advance their careers on the PGA Tour, such cancellations can be particularly frustrating, especially in the FedEx Cup Fall events where every opportunity to gain points and improve status is vital.
