Chacarra Commands Lead Amidst Extended Play

Eugenio Chacarra has secured a two-shot lead at the DP World India Championship, setting the stage for a demanding final day at the Delhi Golf Club. Following significant rain delays earlier in the tournament, players are now navigating an extended schedule for today, Sunday, 18 October 2026.

Chacarra, who stands second in the Race to Dubai standings, demonstrated consistent play to reach 14-under overall. His progress included completing 13 holes of his second round during the morning session, followed by an additional 11 holes in the third round, culminating in a strong finish to yesterday’s play. The Spaniard now faces a challenging 25-hole marathon to conclude the championship.

Chasers and Notable Performances

Chacarra's closest competitors, overnight leaders Joost Luiten and Angel Hidalgo, are positioned two shots behind, maintaining a similarly intense pace through their rounds. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, another prominent figure in the Race to Dubai, found himself off the leading pace.

Despite attracting a large weekend crowd, including former Brazilian football star Ronaldo, McIlroy struggled on the front nine of his third round, carding three bogeys and a double bogey. He later delighted spectators by holing a bunker shot for an eagle on the par-five 14th. McIlroy sits at four-under overall, tied for 40th position, with 21 holes remaining in his final round.

American Patrick Reed, currently leading the Race to Dubai standings, surged into contention with a six-under score in his incomplete third round, climbing to tied 22nd at six-under overall.

Indian Contingent and Strategic Advantage

Six Indian players successfully made the cut for the final rounds, an increase of one compared to the previous edition of the championship. Om Prakash Chouhan leads the home contingent at five-under overall, placing him in tied 30th. Anirban Lahiri is further back, currently tied for 48th position.

Among the few players who managed to complete their rounds, Italy’s Gregorio De Leo and England’s Dan Bradbury posted impressive six-under scores. This completion provides them with a considerable strategic advantage for today’s play, as they will only need to complete the standard 18 holes.

Bradbury noted the benefit, stating, “It is very, very helpful to only have to play 18 holes on Sunday. That is an extra two, maybe three hours in bed.”

Implications for Tournament Management in Asia

The rain-affected schedule and subsequent marathon finish at the Delhi Golf Club underscore the unique challenges of organising tournaments in parts of Asia prone to unpredictable weather patterns. For players, the physical and mental demands of playing up to 25 holes in a single day are immense, potentially influencing strategy and endurance in the closing stages.

Tournament organisers across the region may need to review contingency planning, especially concerning course conditions and player welfare during extended play.

For travelling golf fans, such scenarios highlight the importance of checking local weather forecasts and tournament schedules, as delays can significantly alter the spectator experience and the pace of play at events like the DP World India Championship.
