Eugenio Chacarra's India Triumph

Eugenio Chacarra secured his third DP World Tour title of the current season at the DP World India Championship this past week, marking a significant turnaround in his short game performance. The Spanish professional's victory follows a dedicated six-month effort to refine his putting, an area where he had encountered challenges earlier in the year.

Prior to the BMW PGA Championship, Chacarra had only managed to gain strokes on the greens in five of his sixteen competitive appearances, highlighting a critical aspect of his game requiring immediate attention. His recent triumph in India demonstrates the successful outcome of these extensive technical and practice adjustments.

The Equipment Evolution

The path to Chacarra's improved putting began with a crucial equipment change. He transitioned from a PXG Apache Battle Ready II long putter to a TaylorMade Spider Tour S long putter.

While the initial switch occurred at the Nexo Championship, the new broomstick putter was not immediately effective, as Chacarra still ranked 78th on the DP World Tour for Strokes Gained: Putting before his journey to England.

Further intensive work was undertaken with TaylorMade's European putter team, including representatives Alex Marine and James Holley, at the DP World Tour's flagship event at Wentworth. This collaboration proved pivotal in diagnosing and resolving the underlying issues with his putting setup.

Technical Refinements and Practice Innovation

The detailed analysis at Wentworth revealed that Chacarra's putter was set too upright at 79 degrees, leading him to consistently aim left and strike the ball with the toe in an attempt to correct his line.

TaylorMade engineers addressed this by flattening the putter's lie angle to 76 degrees, allowing Chacarra to achieve a more optimal eyeline over the ball and improve his alignment. The final specifications of his TaylorMade Spider Tour S putter include a 2.5-degree loft, a 76-degree lie, and a 47-inch length, with a total weight of 870 grams.

Beyond equipment, Chacarra also focused on refining his stroke mechanics using the Grasp Technology Smart Putting Gate, an advanced aid that employs high-speed cameras and lasers to measure key putting elements such as speed, line, and impact location. This tool helped him to maintain a stable head position and develop a longer, straighter backstroke and follow-through.

Performance Gains and Future Prospects

Since adopting the refined TaylorMade Spider putter at Wentworth, Chacarra's putting statistics have shown a dramatic improvement. Over his recent four-event stretch, he has ranked third in putting performance, gaining an average of more than 1.5 strokes per round on the greens.

This significant enhancement has propelled him to the forefront of the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai standings, positioning him as a strong contender for a PGA Tour card in 2027. Furthermore, his consistent high-level play has attracted the attention of Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald for the upcoming year's team.

Chacarra's success at the DP World India Championship not only boosts his individual career trajectory but also elevates the profile of Asian events on the global golf calendar, demonstrating their importance as platforms for top-tier professional competition.
