Ogilvy Takes Helm for International Team

Australian Geoff Ogilvy will lead the International Team as captain for the 2026 Presidents Cup, set to take place from September 22–27 at Medinah Country Club's Course No. 3 near Chicago. Appointed in 2025, Ogilvy, a former U.S. Open champion and two-time world match play winner, brings significant experience as a three-time Presidents Cup player.

His appointment follows a long tradition of Australian leadership in the event, including Peter Thomson and Greg Norman. The United States team, captained by Brandt Snedeker and featuring world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, enters the competition as the favourite, largely due to their historical dominance and home advantage. Ogilvy's unique insight into the host course could prove crucial for the International side.

Medinah Course No. 3 Redesign by OCM

A notable advantage for the International Team lies in Captain Ogilvy’s intimate knowledge of Medinah Country Club’s Course No. 3. His design firm, OCM, spearheaded a comprehensive renovation of the layout, which concluded with its reopening in 2024. Rather than simply modernising the course, OCM aimed to reinstate much of its original strategic character.

This involved implementing wider fairways, firmer playing surfaces, more pronounced green contours, and improved angles into the greens. These modifications are designed to reward thoughtful shot-making and strategic play over sheer power, a style of golf often seen and appreciated on courses like those in Australia's Melbourne Sandbelt.

Ogilvy himself noted the personal significance of Medinah when accepting the captaincy, stating the venue "means a great deal to me."

Australia's Enduring Presidents Cup Legacy

Australia holds a significant place in the history of the Presidents Cup, with Geoff Ogilvy becoming the fourth Australian to captain the International Team. The inaugural team in 1994 was led by David Graham. Four years later, in December 1998, Peter Thomson guided the International Team to its sole victory over the Americans, triumphing 20½–11½ at Royal Melbourne.

That performance remains the only time the United States has been defeated in the event. For the 2026 contest, several Australian players are strong contenders for the International Team.

Min Woo Lee appears well-positioned for an automatic qualification spot, while Adam Scott, the International Team's all-time leading points scorer, remains in contention and is a likely captain's selection if needed. Jason Day is also firmly in the qualification race, alongside New Zealand's Ryan Fox, who adds depth to the side.

Match Play Drama and Future Prospects

While the United States typically dominates the Presidents Cup due to its depth and home advantage, match play format inherently introduces an element of unpredictability that stroke play lacks.

Medinah Country Club itself has witnessed such drama, notably hosting the 2012 Ryder Cup where Europe orchestrated the "Miracle at Medinah," overcoming a four-point deficit on the final day to defeat the United States.

The redesigned course at Medinah, favouring imagination and intelligent course management, could suit an International Team accustomed to firm, fast conditions and led by a captain with unparalleled course knowledge. Beyond this year, the Presidents Cup is scheduled to return to Australia in 2028, with Kingston Heath hosting the event for the first time.

A strong showing at Medinah would build momentum for that home fixture and potentially evoke memories of the International Team's historic 1998 victory at Royal Melbourne.
