Across the two days, the former world number one managed only three birdies, which were significantly overshadowed by ten bogeys and two double bogeys.

His total score left him 23 shots adrift of the 36-hole leader, Ryan Gerard. This 155 total mirrored a previous career low from the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he also posted rounds of 78 and 77.

Prior to this year's event, Rahm had a strong record at the BMW PGA Championship. He finished as runner-up on two occasions, in 2019 and 2022, secured a fourth-place finish in 2023, and tied for 13th place last year. These past performances had set high expectations for the Spaniard, who entered the week ranked 14th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

His performance at Wentworth represents a significant setback from his established form and consistent play at the tournament.

Future Outlook Amid LIV Golf Uncertainty

Following this disappointing result, Rahm will need to regain form in upcoming fall events to improve his Official World Golf Ranking and potentially re-enter the world top 10. His professional future is further complicated by the ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings involving LIV Golf, with whom he is currently contracted.

LIV Golf has reportedly sought judicial approval in its New Jersey bankruptcy case to terminate player contracts on a forward-looking basis. While Rahm has publicly affirmed his commitment to honouring his original agreement, the league's ability to reject player contracts could open avenues for him to explore other playing opportunities from 2027 onwards.
