Indonesian professional Patricia Walanda Sinolungan and Thai amateur Kanyarak Pongpithanon hold a joint lead after the opening round of the Maybank Championship 2026 ASEAN Qualifier. Both players recorded a three-under-par 69 on the West Course at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
Sinolungan's Strong Start and Recovery
Patricia Walanda Sinolungan, an Indonesian professional, began her round strongly on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. She played the first nine holes without a bogey, securing three birdies to reach three-under-par. Her front nine score was 33 strokes. Sinolungan faced challenges on the second nine, recording three bogeys. However, she recovered in the final three holes.
She made a birdie on the 16th hole and an eagle on the 17th. This strong finish allowed her to close the round with a 69. Sinolungan stated her putting was effective early in the round, creating several scoring chances. She also described her eagle on the 17th, using a rescue club for her tee shot and a nine-iron from 116 metres for her approach. The ball faded precisely to the target.
Pongpithanon Matches Lead with Consistent Play
Kanyarak Pongpithanon, a 16-year-old amateur from Thailand, matched Sinolungan’s score of 69. Pongpithanon played her first nine holes at even-par. She then demonstrated an aggressive approach on the back nine. Her performance included four birdies and one bogey over the final nine holes. This allowed her to finish at three-under-par, earning a share of the lead.
Her consistent play shows her ability to compete at this level. Both players now sit atop the leaderboard as the tournament progresses. The qualifier offers a pathway for regional players to advance to a significant championship.
Other Contenders and Qualification Stakes
Filipino player Florence Yvon Bisera finished the first round in third position. She carded a two-under-par 70. Bisera’s round included four birdies on the back nine, showing a strong finish. Two other Thai players, Pimnipa Panthong and amateur Marisa Tojai, share fourth place. Both players recorded a one-under-par 71.
The competition continues into the second round on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. Following 36 holes of play, the five best-performing players will receive invitations. These invitations grant them entry into the Maybank Championship 2026. This qualifier provides a merit-based route for ASEAN golfers to compete in the main event.
