Tasmanian Jonty Lunson Secures Singapore Open Amateur, Joins Nomura Cup Squad

Rapid Ascent to Regional Victory

Jonty Lunson, a 19-year-old amateur from Tasmania, has quickly established himself among Australia's top golf talents, despite only turning his focus to the sport at age 14. His rapid progression culminated in a significant victory at the Singapore Open Amateur in July this year.

Lunson delivered consistent play with rounds of 66, 68, 66, and 67, securing a one-stroke win over Queenslander Harrison Gomez. This win extends Australia's recent dominance in the event, marking the second consecutive Australian triumph and the third in four years, following previous victories by Harry Takis in 2025 and Lincoln Morgan in 2023.

Representing Australia in Asia-Pacific Championship

Lunson's performance in Singapore earned him a coveted spot on the three-man Australian team for the Nomura Cup, officially known as the Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship. This biennial event, which began in 1963, is scheduled to take place in China this September. Australia holds a strong record in the competition, having won the Nomura Cup 10 times.

Lunson's selection highlights his growing presence in the regional amateur circuit, having competed in seven ranking events across Australia and Asia this year, consistently finishing within the top six.

Consistent Domestic Performances

Beyond his Asian success, Lunson has demonstrated remarkable consistency in Australian amateur events throughout 2026. He finished fourth at the Australian Amateur Championship held in Perth in February and secured a third-place finish at the Keperra Bowl in Brisbane.

Further top-six placements include the Tasmanian Open at Launceston Golf Club and the Riversdale Cup in Victoria. In May, Lunson also distinguished himself as Tasmania's leading player at the Australian Interstate Teams Matches at Glenelg, contributing significant wins against opponents from South Australia and New South Wales.

Future Professional Ambitions

Jonty Lunson is currently honing his skills at Devonport Country Club, where head professional Luke Hickman praises his exceptional ball-striking ability. Lunson, who also works with Tasmania's state coach Richard Coombe, acknowledges the unique training environment in Tasmania, offering focused practice without external pressure.

Looking ahead, Lunson plans to continue competing in amateur events for another one to two years before potentially attending Q School in 2028 with the aim of turning professional. He has declined offers to attend a United States college, preferring a direct path to the world stage.

His success in regional Asian amateur events and his choice of career trajectory could offer a compelling model for other aspiring Asian golfers considering pathways beyond the collegiate system.
