Project Overview and Timeline
Thatluang Lake Golf Resort in Vientiane, Laos, is scheduled for an official launch before the end of 2026. This new golf destination is situated within the Thatluang Lake Special Economic Zone, an area currently undergoing rapid development in the capital. The project features an 18-hole, par-70 golf course, measuring approximately 6,007 yards.
Faldo Design provided the architectural plans, with construction handled by Flagstick GCCM. Sports Turf Solutions (STS) supplied the turf system for the course, which is being developed to cater to both local golfers in Vientiane and international golf visitors.
Course Design and Features
The course design, by Faldo Design, capitalises on the naturally low and flat terrain of the region. It integrates greenery, water features, bunkers, and subtle elevation changes to create varied play throughout the layout. Given the relatively compact site, the course prioritises accuracy and shot positioning over pure distance, with an optimised distance between holes.
A notable aspect of the construction involved raising the overall site elevation by an average of 2–4 metres from the original ground level. A comprehensive system of lakes and drainage networks has been implemented to manage water flow effectively, while also enhancing the course's aesthetic appeal.
For the playing surfaces, Zeon Zoysia is used for the fairways, tees, and rough, complemented by TifEagle Bermuda on the greens. This selection of turf varieties aims to ensure consistent playing conditions and surface quality throughout the year.
Training Facilities and Management
Beyond the championship course, Thatluang Lake Golf Resort will also incorporate a golf academy and a two-tier driving range. These facilities are designed to support various levels of practice, training, and player development.
The project benefits from the involvement of golf management company IMG, alongside the expertise of Faldo Design, Flagstick GCCM, and Sports Turf Solutions. This collective effort positions the resort as a new and comprehensive golf destination within the region, aiming to enhance Laos's presence in the Asian golf market.
Market Expansion and Regional Connections
The introduction of Thatluang Lake Golf Resort will expand Vientiane's golf offerings, contributing to the overall growth of golf destinations within Laos. The project aims to establish connections with golfers from key regional markets, including China, South Korea, and other Southeast Asian countries.
This new facility, with its training and practice amenities, can provide an additional option for the country’s developing golf market.
